What Chapin is built from
Lexington County, on the northwestern shore of Lake Murray. Waterfront and water-access houses with docks and boathouses, subdivisions set back from the shoreline, and a small older town centre inland of both. Screened porches and back doors that open onto a slope down to the water are close to standard.
A mix of full-time households and weekend places, with a strong seasonal rhythm — occupied hard from spring through early autumn and quiet midweek. Good rugs are common in the main rooms of the waterfront houses, laid on hardwood.
The Chapin problem
Lake Murray is roughly fifty thousand acres with something like six hundred and fifty miles of shoreline, impounded behind the Saluda Dam since 1930, and a house on that shoreline sits in air that stays close to saturation on a summer night. The distinctive failure here is the weekend pattern: the family leaves on Sunday, the thermostat gets set back for five days to save on cooling, and the system barely runs — which means it barely dehumidifies — through the hottest, wettest part of the week. The rug spends five days out of seven above the moisture level a wool foundation can shed, every week, all summer. Nobody is there to notice, and the tell when they come back is a smell rather than a mark. On top of that runs the ordinary lake traffic: freshwater silt and shoreline mud carried up from the dock, wet swimsuits dropped on a rug, and dogs that go in the water four times a day. None of it leaves salt behind, so nothing here is hygroscopic — the problem is simply that the rug is never given a genuinely dry week.
