What Lexington is built from
The seat of Lexington County, west of the river below the Lake Murray dam, and one of the fastest-growing parts of the Midlands for three decades. Older houses around Main Street, and beyond them subdivision after subdivision of newer brick and frame houses, largely slab-on-grade, built over what was farmland and pine.
Commuting families in large numbers, a lot of first and second houses, and rugs bought retail for a specific room rather than collected over a lifetime. Hand-knotted pieces turn up mainly in the older housing nearer the town centre.
The Lexington problem
Lexington sits on the clay side of the fall line, and clay does two things to a rug. It does not drain, so yards stay wet for days after the rain and mud gets carried in for days after that; and it is iron-rich, which means what it leaves is a stain rather than a smudge. A rust-coloured mark on wool needs to be treated as an iron problem with the right chemistry, and the usual household response — scrubbing it wet with whatever is under the sink — drives it into the foundation and spreads it into a ring twice the original size. Newer construction adds the slab. A slab sits below room temperature and moves moisture toward itself, so a wool rug laid on it, especially with a solid rubber pad underneath, is wetted from below and dried from above at the same time, permanently. That is a slow failure: nothing looks wrong for years, and then the back of the rug is grey and the room smells.
