What Cayce is built from
Lexington County, on the west bank of the Congaree directly across from Columbia, with the Avenues laid out on the flat river terrace behind State Street. Frame and brick houses from the 1920s through the 1960s on crawlspaces, a good deal of recent renovation, and newer building closer to the river walk.
A walkable, mixed neighborhood of long-term owners and people who have moved in for the price and the position. Rugs come from all over — inherited, secondhand and new — and most of them sit on refinished wood floors.
The Cayce problem
Everything about Cayce comes back to the river. The Broad and the Saluda join just upstream to form the Congaree, and this side of it is river-terrace ground: sandy, low and lying against a channel that carries the drainage of a very large area upstream. When that river comes up it does not come up clean, and October 2015 is the local reference point for how far it can go. A rug that has taken river water is carrying silt and whatever the water crossed on the way, which has to be flushed out of the foundation rather than dried on top of — a fan blowing over it dries the pile, seals the rest in, and buys about three weeks. Away from the flood story, the ordinary Cayce problem is the crawlspace on sandy ground, which lets summer air in underneath a raised floor all season, and the fine river sand that comes in on shoes and settles at the base of the pile where it cuts the knots from below.
