What Olympia is built from
The mill village at the south end of the city, built around the Olympia and Granby cotton mills at the turn of the last century: small one- and two-storey frame houses on a tight grid, close together and raised on piers. The mill buildings themselves have been converted to apartments, and most of the village is now rented.
Overwhelmingly University of South Carolina students — the Columbia campus enrolls more than thirty thousand — alongside the households who have been here far longer. Rugs are cheap, plentiful, and bought to cover a bad floor rather than to last.
The Olympia problem
Olympia runs on the academic calendar, and that is what wrecks rugs here. Everything comes up off the floor in May and goes into a storage unit, a garage or the back of a parent's house for the summer, which in this city means three months at ninety-plus degrees with no conditioning at all — and it goes in rolled, unwashed, with a semester of grit and spills still in it. Warm, dark, still and dirty is the specification for both mildew and carpet beetles, and the rug that comes back out in August is not the rug that went in. The second problem is the wash people attempt themselves: a hand-tufted or machine-made rug hosed off on a driveway and stood against a fence to dry, which soaks the latex, sets the stains and leaves the foundation wet in the middle for a week. If a rug is going into storage, it needs to be clean and properly dry first, not after.
