What Heathwood is built from
Developed from the 1930s east of Shandon around Heathwood Circle and out toward Trenholm Road, on lots considerably larger than the grid it grew off. Brick Colonial Revival and Georgian houses with formal dining and living rooms, later mid-century ranches filling the gaps, and hardwood through the main floor rather than tile.
Established households with formal rooms that are furnished properly and used a handful of times a year. This is where the best rugs in the city tend to be, and where the largest of them are — nine-by-twelves and twelve-by-fifteens under dining tables that never move.
The Heathwood problem
The damage here comes from how the house is cooled rather than from anything anyone spills. A big brick house in a Columbia July runs its air conditioning hard, and the standard economy is to shut the door on the formal rooms and close their registers. That leaves one or two rooms sitting warm, still and humid while the rest of the house is comfortable, and the rug in them is the coolest surface in the room. Nothing moves across it, nothing dries, and it is dark under the table. That is the exact condition clothes moths want, and they graze the underside first, so the pile reads as intact while the knots behind it are going. Two more things show up on this street: heavy furniture standing on hand-knotted wool for decades, which crushes pile flat and stops what little air movement there was, and long low summer light through south-facing glass, which takes madder red and indigo down a band at a time and does not come back.
